Oakland basketball loses to N.C. State in OT in NCAA tournament: ‘Hard because it’s over’

Pittsburgh: Good things always have to end. This was accomplished on Saturday by Oakland basketball’s incredible run. Less than 48 hours after upsetting third-seeded Kentucky to become the early favorites in the tournament, the 14-seed Golden Grizzlies lost to 11-seed N.C. State, 79-73 in overtime at PPG Paints Arena in the second round of the NCAA tournament. “Quite distinct from a few evenings prior,” OU head coach Greg Kampe remarked. “It’s hard because it’s over.” In the second half, Jack Gohlke and Trey Townsend stole the stage. After making six of his seventeen 3-pointers, Gohlke finished with eight rebounds and 22 points, while Townsend, the Horizon League Player of the Year, finished with thirty points and thirteen rebounds.

Townsend described Burns as “that guy down there,” saying he was a burden. “We exerted every effort possible. It simply didn’t come back to us.”

Extra basketball
Townsend split two free throws to open the scoring in the extra session with the score knotted at 66, but Burns scored a finger-roll layup on the other end.
Burns grabbed an offensive rebound following a failed 3-point attempt from the short corner, and his putback gave N.C. State a lead it wouldn’t let go after two free throws by Townsend had given Oakland the lead, 69-68.

“I don’t think that ball even got 10-feet-2 in the air,” Kampe stated. It strikes the large man directly in front of the rim and descends.

“Those are the bounces of the game.”

In 1:33, DJ Horne scored a mid-range jumper to put the team up three points following a mistake on a feed from DQ Cole to Townsend. With 1:13 remaining, Jayden Taylor made the game-winning 3-pointer from the right corner to put the score up to five points. Blake Lampman answered with a free throw to get within two.
With 17 seconds remaining, Burns scored four straight free throws to put Oakland up, 79-70, but Cole’s 3-pointer with 13 seconds left brought Oakland back within six.

As Oakland’s run came to an end, Gohlke missed his third consecutive 3-point attempt after the Grizzlies forced a turnover.

“We’ve done a tremendous job this whole season of executing late game and today we just didn’t do as good of a job,” Gohlke stated. “Give N.C. State credit; they played excellent defense tonight and stymied several of our desired plays, particularly on the last overtime possession. “In the latter moments of the game, it all boils down to such little margins. We played well in the Kentucky game, which is why things went our way; here, we tried our hardest, but N.C. State made the key plays at the right moments.”

In what seemed to be the last minutes, Gohlke scored his sixth 3-pointer of the game with ease after catching the ball on the left wing and pump faked the defense, cutting Oakland’s deficit to four with less than four minutes remaining.

Oakland took its first lead, 63-61, on the ensuing possession as Townsend converted a three-point play.

With five and a half remaining, Michael O’Connell of N.C. State made a diving layup and drew a foul to extend Oakland’s lead to two points. Fifteen seconds later, Gohlke was fouled without the ball and converted two free throws with 41.7 seconds remaining to tie the game.

Oakland attempted to draw up one last look in regulation following a miss by N.C. State.

“The ball was getting to Townsend facing the basket at the left elbow,” Kampe stated. “One of those three things was going to happen: he was going to rip and drive, be the hero, or go to the free throw line. That was the plan.

The Golden Grizzlies had a poor start, missing seven of their first eight shots, much like they did on Thursday night.

No such time was needed for Horne to heat up. He opened the scoring for the Wolfpack with a transition layup, then went on to make a 3-pointer from the left wing and a floater. Burns then entered the game with a low-post lefty hook to put the team up 9-2.

Before Gohlke, who received a standing ovation upon his arrival, nailed his first 3-pointer of the game from the right wing on his first shot attempt, Chris Conway added a put-back dunk to bring OU back within two.

“I know in my life I’ve never put a sub in and seen a place go nuts three minutes into a game,” Kampe stated. “Is there seating for, say, 18,000 people here? When he entered the game three minutes in, it was the greatest cheer of the evening. He then caught it and made it.”

Throughout the first twelve minutes of the game, Gohlke was face-guarded by Taylor as he sprinted about the court, as N.C. State alternated between Morsell, O’Connell, and Taylor as defenders. That was the only shot attempt he was able to complete during that time.

By the time he attempted another 3-pointer, it was unsuccessful, and the Wolfpack reversed course in transition, scoring a hoop from Taylor to take a 26-17 lead and electrify the group of red-clad supporters.
While all was going on, Lampman made two 3-pointers to keep OU in contention.

Oakland kept making progress. Gohlke was finally able to move on when Conway used a turnaround bucket to staunch the bleeding. Following a scooping layup by Diarra, he utilized a pump fake to gain a clear look from the top of the key and drill a 3-pointer. Gohlke then scored another 3-pointer off a curl from the right wing to bring Oakland back within three, 28-25.

Despite only scoring two of its final twelve field goals, N.C. State led, 32-29, at the half, although the Wolfpack led, 20–12, in points in the paint.

A two-person performance
During the first four possessions of the second half, Oakland made a determined attempt to feed Townsend.
“We changed our strategy so that we could either grab a rebound or, in the event that they scored, shoot the ball off the court,” Kampe stated. “We played with a lot more fluidity in the second half, and we were able to get Trey the ball.”

Oakland pulled within two, 36-34, when Townsend missed the first possession then spat out two free throws on the next. He then hit a righty hook from the left block, placed the ball on the deck, and blasted by Burns for a layup.
“We changed our strategy so that we could either grab a rebound or, in the event that they scored, shoot the ball off the court,” Kampe stated. “We played with a lot more fluidity in the second half, and we were able to get Trey the ball.”

Gohlke missed a 3-point attempt to give OU its first lead of the game after a Burns error, and he did not receive the foul call he was hoping for. Conversely, Burns responded with a spinning layup and Morsell made a transition 3-pointer to extend N.C. State’s advantage to seven points.

Townsend answered with a three-point play, and Gohlke ultimately intervened again. Lampman scooped up the ball in transition and passed it to Gohlke, who hammered the long ball from one step inside the logo after the Grizzlies forced a loose ball turnover.

Kampe declared, “Trey Townsend is a pro.” “He proved it tonight.”

During the half, N.C. State led 51-45 when Burns broke free of a triple-team and found Morsell on the right wing. O’Connell then made two 3-pointers from the same field to complete the set.
With less than six minutes remaining, Gohlke made another three-pointer while getting fouled, and the free throw brought OU within two points. Townsend then sandwiched a three-pointer from the left wing and a hook shot around a Burns layup to get OU back within three.

However, it was unable to defeat the 24-point, 10-rebound, 4-assist, 6-foot-10, 275-pound DJ Burns, or his four teammates who scored in double figures: Mohamed Diarra, DJ Horne, Casey Morsell, and Michael O’Connell all finished with 11 points apiece.

Townsend described Burns as “that guy down there,” saying he was a burden. “We exerted every effort possible. It simply didn’t come back to us.”
